Golf buying guide

Cart bag, stand bag or hybrid?

Which golf bag suits you mainly depends on one question: do you play with a trolley or carry your bag? We list the types of bags and tell you what to look for.

Step 1

Types of golf bags

With trolley

Cart bag (trolley bag)

For the trolley

Made to sit on a trolley. All pockets are at the front and top, so you can easily reach them on the trolley.

  • Lots of storage space and pockets
  • Often a 14-way divider: every club its own place
  • Sits stably on the trolley
  • Not made for carrying long distances
  • No fold-out legs

Ideal for: Golfers who (almost) always play with a trolley.

Stand bag (carry bag)

For carrying

A light bag with two shoulder straps and fold-out legs, so it stays upright.

  • Light and comfortable to carry
  • Legs fold out automatically
  • Can also be used on a trolley
  • Less storage than a cart bag
  • On a trolley the legs can get in the way

Ideal for: Those who carry their bag, for example at the driving range or during short rounds.

Hybrid bag

The best of both

A combination of a cart bag and a stand bag: with legs and straps, but also with a base that sits well on a trolley.

  • Flexible: carry and trolley
  • More space than a stand bag
  • Slightly heavier than a pure stand bag

Ideal for: Those who alternate between carrying and playing with a trolley.

Pencil bag / Sunday bag

Light and small

A minimalist bag for a handful of clubs. Ideal for a quick nine holes or the driving range.

  • Very light
  • Small and easy to take along
  • Room for only a few clubs
  • Little storage

Ideal for: Short rounds, the driving range and winter golf.

Step 2

What to look for?

How to choose the right bag

  1. DividerA 14-way divider gives every club its own place, so grips don't get tangled. A 4- or 5-way divider is lighter.
  2. WeightCarrying the bag? Then check the weight. Light stand bags weigh around 2 kilos.
  3. WaterproofDo you also play in the rain? A waterproof bag with taped seams keeps your belongings dry.
  4. PocketsThink of a cooler pocket for drinks, a fleece-lined pocket for valuables and an umbrella holder.
  5. TrolleyUsing a trolley? Choose a bag with a base that fits your trolley.
  6. Colour and styleWe stock most bags in several colours. Choose one that suits you.
Waterproof or water-repellent?

A waterproof bag has sealed seams and zips and truly keeps rain out. Water-repellent material stops a shower, but is not fully sealed in prolonged rain.

Frequently asked questions about golf bags

How many clubs can I carry in my bag?

Under the rules of golf you may carry a maximum of 14 clubs in a round. That is why many bags have a 14-way divider.

Can I use a stand bag on a trolley?

Yes, you can. Make sure the legs don't get in the way. Some stand bags have a special base that fits well on a trolley.
