Golf buying guide

Choosing the right golf set

Just starting golf, or picking it up again after years? A complete set is the easiest and most affordable start. We recommend the Skymax sets: forgiving, well finished and sharply priced.

Step 1

Half or complete set?

A half set contains the most important clubs to get started. A complete set has a club for every distance and is ideal if you play more often.

S1 half set

Skymax S1

The affordable entry. A fairway wood 3, irons 5, 7 and 9, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, a putter and a headcover.

  • Lowest entry price
  • Enough for lessons, the driving range and your first rounds
  • Available with steel or graphite shaft
  • Fewer clubs, so larger distance gaps between clubs

Ideal for: Those who want to try golf and are training for their golf proficiency certificate.

Step 2

Steel or graphite?

Steel shaft

As

Slightly heavier and stiffer. You feel better how you strike the ball.

  • More control and feel
  • Suitable for players who swing a bit harder
  • Slightly heavier
  • More vibration on a mishit

Ideal for: Sporty men with a brisk swing.

Graphite shaft

As

Lighter and more flexible. The club swings more easily and dampens vibrations.

  • Light, so easier to generate speed
  • Less vibration in hands and wrists
  • Slightly less direct feedback

Ideal for: Women, seniors and golfers with a calmer swing or joint problems.

Step 3

The right size

How to tailor the set to you

  1. Left or rightA right-handed golfer stands with the left shoulder towards the flag. The IX-5 sets are also available left-handed.
  2. Men or womenWomen's sets are shorter and lighter, with a more flexible shaft.
  3. LengthTaller than average? An extended set often plays more comfortably. The S1 is also available in +1 inch; with the IX-5 you can freely choose from +0.5 to +2 inches, at no extra charge.
  4. Grip sizeLarge hands? Choose a midsize or jumbo grip. With the IX-5 this is possible at no extra charge.
  5. Add a bagCombine your set with a light stand bag or a spacious cart bag.

Frequently asked questions about golf sets

Is a half set enough to start with?

Yes. For lessons, the driving range and your first rounds, a half set has everything you need. With the IX-5 you can add individual clubs to the set later.

What is the difference between a hybrid and an iron?

A hybrid replaces a long iron (3 or 4). The wide club head with a low centre of gravity makes it much easier to hit the ball high and far.

How long will a Skymax set last me?

With normal use, an IX-5 set lasts many years. Only when your handicap drops considerably might you consider switching to a set more tailored to your swing.
